RGJ.com: Moana Lane extension opens
I took a drive down the new Moana extension. It starts where the street previously ended, just east of 395, and winds down until it connects with the beginning of Double R. They are expecting 20,000 cars per day, and while it's not much use to me personally, more cars on Moana means less cars on the highway, and hence (hopefully) a better commute for me. Here's where the new street goes:

Now, it's time for another one of fo0bar's crazy construction predictions, prompted by this extension: The Reno airport will be moved within 10 years.
First of all, the extension cuts into former airport land, and the western part of the land isn't fenced in, suggesting the city bought it. While it doesn't really affect airport operations (the new street goes parallel to the runway, just like the stretch to the north), airports generally don't like to give up land.
More telling, as you travel south on the new street, there are left-turn-only lanes every couple hundred feet. If you were to turn on those lands, you would hit a fence immediately, and just beyond the fence is the taxiway. Not even enough room to build a service road.
I'm not sure where they would build a replacement airport, but I think it will happen eventually. The city has grown to envelope the airport in the last 20 years or so, and there's just no room to expand if they needed to.
(Fun fact: The Denver International Airport's property is 53 square miles. That's larger than the city of San Francisco.)

If you don't vote today, the kitten gets it.
BE SURE TO VERIFY YOUR POLLING PLACE. It may have changed since 2004 (like in my case). If you live in Washoe county, there is a form to retrieve your information and get directions to your polling place.

The downtown Dairy Queen has closed. The sign says "closed for redevelopment, thank you Reno", which probably means it'll turn into condos or something.
