I now have 10mbps/1mbps charter internet service. $69.99/month. They're not advertising it yet, but you can call/walk in now and get your account upgraded.
There were rumors of this throughout the summer, and the "outer reno metro areas" (think Minden) got it a few months ago. But at one point I heard October 1. I called in the middle of September, and was told "sorry, we don't have a firm date, but it'll probably be in November". Later on I heard "November 15" through the grapevine.
But on Monday, I heard that a friend of a friend of a coworker got it, and he was in Reno. I called up Charter, and the woman switched my account over in about 30 seconds. I hung up, logged into my home firewall, and started playing around. Upload was definitely 1mbps, but download was topping off at about 5.3mbps. I did a little research, and found that my 5-year-old cable modem (which I had bought) was not DOCSIS 2.0, and DOCSIS 2.0 was required for higher speeds. I stopped off at the Charter building after work, rented a new modem ($3/mo), got it activated while at the counter, and plugged it in at home. Boom, 9.4mbps from kernel.org.

It's great that LiveJournal now has a chat service that is based on Jabber, though that means I have yet another Jabber ID. Here's a known list of accounts:
* ryan@colobox.com (Main account, this is what I'm online all the time as)
* fo0bar@livejournal.com
* fo0bar@jabber.org
* ryan@pigdog.org
* rfinnie@gmail.com
* ryanfinnie@chat.gizmoproject.com
* Probably others I'm forgetting
Don't get me wrong, I love Jabber and wish that closed IM networks would just go away. Many people don't realize that Jabber is a routed network; essentially the SMTP protocol of the IM world. joe@foo.com can send an IM to jane@bar.com, even though they are both on different servers, because the servers are capable of routing messages between each other. My colobox.com server can talk to gmail which can talk to livejournal, etc, etc.
What this boils down to:
* If you use the LiveJournal chat service, add me as ryan@colobox.com.
* If you use the gmail chat service, add me as ryan@colobox.com.
* If you use ANY Jabber service, add me as ryan@colobox.com.
* Add me! I'm lonely!

After almost exactly 11 months, I came home to find the mini turned off. Turning it on brought up a dark grey screen. Resetting the PRAM didn't help, and while I can get into openfirmware, "eject cd" and "mac-boot" just freeze the system. In addition, the CDROM drive will no longer suck in a disc. Sounds like the IDE bus is dead.
Amazingly, I still have the receipt and box. Looks like I have a date with the Apple Store tomorrow.
