I upgraded colobox from PHP4 to PHP5 via backports.org. Overall it went smoothly. Some notes:
1. The version in backports.org (5.1.6) isn't even in Debian unstable yet, which makes me contemplate the meaning of the word "backports".
2. None of the PHP modules were working. I eventually realized it was because I installed the apache2 module AFTER the PHP modules, so they weren't registered in apache2/php.ini. dpkg-reconfigure on the modules fixed that.
3. backports.org doesn't include php5-mcrypt. WTF.
4. All out-of-the box apps worked fine, including mediawiki, phpbb, wordpress, phpmyadmin and squirrelmail.
5. The only PHP "project" I "actively" "maintain" (read: hasn't been updated since 2004), rfrandpass, worked fine. kmMail, a dead project (read: hasn't been updated since 2002) breaks horribly, probably because it relies on global variables. While I still consider kmMail to have the best MIME parsing engine out there (I have an "updated" version of the MIME torture test to my name, and kmMail is the only webmail program that even comes close to compliance), I don't care enough about the project to revive/fix it.
6. Beside kmMail (which I don't use anymore), the only things that broke were the wrapper scripts to make snapshots.finnix.org and packages.finnix.org have pretty directory listings. However, that is blamed on the weird fu I was doing in .htaccess to get that to work. It was a 1-line .htaccess fix.
7. I fully expect gargargar to comment with something like "ha ha PHP".

My current home router is a gutted P4M 1.6GHz Dell laptop with no keyboard or display. I turned it into a router after it started frying video cards (some Dells have a separate video daughterboard), with the home LAN on the main ethernet, and the cable modem plugged into a PCMCIA ethernet card. Lately, the fan has been making weird noises, with occasional clicks/pops coming from the hard drive.
I've seen the writings on the wall. I need to find something as close to silent as possible to replace it, since it's in the living room (the only cable outlet in the apartment is in the living room). Maybe a Mini, if they weren't so (relatively) expensive...

The beige G3 would not boot the (pristine-looking) OS 8 disc. The concensus of the interwub seems to be "Apple's compatibility table is wrong; 8.0 will only boot on an AIO". There's $15 down the drain.
8.6 may work, but the cheapest I could find was $30, and I'm not paying $30 for something that may or may not work. Let me remind you, the G3 (in the form that I received it) did not come with any OS, the only thing I've got that boots on it is a burned copy of Jaguar (newer OS X will not boot on oldworlds), and all I want to do is get Debian on it, which basically requires BootX, and BootX requires OS 8/9.
So I ask you, brave members of the interferret... Do you have an old retail copy of any version of Mac OS 8.0 8.1 - 9.2.2? Send me an ISO. I will send you $10 if it works. $10. I spare no expenses when it comes to ancient hardware.

Thank you for figuring out I meant to put "amd64" and not "x86" in the extra version foo, and hence preventing me from overwriting the actual x86 package... but do you think you could have figured this out BEFORE you spent an hour compiling?

Somewhere in the country, there is a USPS truck with a copy of Mac OS 8 addressed to me in it.
