I found a bug in the current Debian sarge 2.6.8 kernel. A rather nasty one. When you set up a VLAN trunk, the kernel goes into an infinite panic loop, until it eventually runs out of memory. However:
1) I can only reproduce it on one machine. Everywhere else it works fine.
2) I can't exactly take this machine down arbitrarily to test.
3) If I report this as a bug:
3.1) I won't be much help debugging it because of #2, and
3.2) They will probably label it as RC, and because of #3.1, it'll probably drag out the release of sarge. Society will crumble, there will be nude looters in the streets, and I'll be to blame.
So, I don't think I'll be reporting it. Instead, I converted the latest Fedora Core 3 2.6.11 kernel to a .deb file[0], which works, so I'm confident that once work on Debian etch begins, a completely new kernel will be submitted, and this'll be forgotten.
[0] It's actually quite easy, if you care:
1) Download and unpack SRPM.
2) Unpack kernel source tarball.
3) Apply patches. I wrote a little script to parse the .spec file and determine the order to apply the patches.
4) Copy appropriate arch .config to kernel dir, change cramfs to be compiled into the kernel, and enable devfs (but not started upon boot).
5) Optionally edit Makefile and add stuff to EXTRAVERSION. In my case, I changed it to "-fc3-1.27-686".
6) "make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image" -- This creates a .deb file in the previous directory.
7) One of the patches disables stripping of the modules (the .spec file does that manually and stores the symbols in a debugging package), which makes the initrd too big. I could hunt down the patch that does this, but instead, do this:
7.1) "find . -name '*.ko' | xargs -n 50 strip --strip-debug --strip-unneeded"
7.2) "make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image" again
This leaves me with "kernel-image-2.6.11-fc3-1.27-686_10.00.Custom_i386.deb", that functions exactly like any other kernel .deb file.

Have you been wondering if sarge has been released? Well now you don't have to.

According to the Nevada DMV's site, you're only exempt from smog checks for the first 2 years on a new car purchase. I just paid for my 4th year on the Prius, and so far the renewal notice has always said a smog check was not needed. Perhaps they recognize that my car is NUCLEAR POWERED!
Also, I keep forgetting that in Nevada, while the tags say "May 2005", the renewal is actually due on the renewal date (in my case, May 10), not the end of the month. Damn $29 fine. Without that, this would have been the first year with sub-$200 taxes.
Maybe after I get the tags and the renewal is confirmed, I'll get a vanity plate.

As you know, June is National CVS Revision Conflict Awareness Month. Each year, over 2 million people suffer from CRC, a condition experienced when 2 developers check in conflicting code revisions. But with your help, we can eliminate CRC in our lifetime!
We still have to pick a ribbon to symbolize CRC awareness. All colors in the visible spectrum have already been taken by other groups, so I'm thinking something towards the infrared. Suggestions?

<CrackMonkey> I just got back from Star Wars III
<fo0bar> as did I
<fo0bar> I really liked the part where yoda took jar jar as his apprentice
<CrackMonkey> It was pretty, but I couldn't figure out the controls. So I was basically just button mashing during the combat scenes, and I couldn't tell waht was happening. I didn't win: the evil emperor took over and darth vader is still alive.
<CrackMonkey> so, sorry about that guys
<fo0bar> did you try the konami code?
<Zen> fo0bar: this is Namco

I swear, sarge is getting more updates now than pre-freeze.
d-i isn't final yet, so I'm guessing they won't make the May 30 release. Not that anyone was actually expecting that to happen.

My parents' PC died recently, and being the nice son I am, I built them a replacement. A nice one too, as their last one lasted 5 years, and I'd like this one to last many years as well. Athlon64 3400+, 2GB memory, 300GB SATA HD, DVD/CD-RW (DL), and a nice video card, all in a Shuttle case.
I ordered from newegg, and when it came time to check out, all the components came out to about $20 shipping for 3-day, or $35 for next-day. My mom starts foaming around the mouth without her email, so I chose next-day. Pretty normal rates, or so I've come to expect. I built the system, put winxp on it, updated it, loaded the essential software (office, antivirus, MS antispyware, and VNC for when they need help), and tested it. Today I called my mom, explained the prices ("how much longer can you live without a computer?"), and we agreed on next-day. Then I headed to fedex.
"I'd like to ship this box (from Reno) to Middle of Nowhere, WI, next-day."
Fedex guy weighs it.
"Okay, 16lbs... That'll be $74.80."
"!!!"
I forgot how much location has to do with things. Shipping from LA (City of Industry seems to be where most stuff is shipped out of) to Reno is quite cheap. For example, I've been told that when you ship from LA to Reno next-day "air", fedex will fly it from LA to Oakland, but then put it on a truck to go to Reno. After all, as long as it gets there in one business day... However, shipping from Reno to Wisconsin Rapids, WI probably involves flying to a main distribution point (somewhere around Chicago or Minneapolis, I would imagine), then flying to a secondary distribution like Madison or Green Bay, then on a truck to Wisconsin Rapids (about 2.5 hours from either location).
In the end, I still chose next-day, as it was easier than weaseling out of it with the parents. :)

Well, from the foreword. This book is currently dadadodo-ifying my vast number of web sites.
It appears that Jesus the Christed One of God visited the planets of our Solar system, the planet Mars being one of those visited and investigated. And, as a proof of this it was Jesus Christ who functioned as chairman or presidentat the great Peace Conference held in the vast coliseum on the first sphere of the Heavens of our Earth. That was in the year 1912, as fully reported in "World of Tomorrow," page 98. It was at that conference He stated that Universal Peace must be speeded up, as there were other planets to be investigated: and that the Earth stood in the way and was becoming a menace to neighboring planets.
