Meet Poseidon. On Wednesday, I went down to the SPCA to look at cats. That night, I bought some supplies, and this morning, I picked him up. He's been adjusting very well. I read a cat book that reminded me of what to get and what to expect bringing a cat home. The book said to put his litter box, food and other stuff in a small room, keep him in there the first couple days, then slowly introduce him to the rest of the house. I chose my office/second bedroom, which has a bathroom (where the litter box is) and would suit him well.
The book (and the SPCA) said he'd probably find a dark corner and hide there for awhile, and I shouldn't force him to play or anything; he should warm up to me on his own. When I took him out of the carrier, he went to a corner under a table and stayed there for... oh, about 2 minutes. Then he got to work exploring the room. After he was acclimated with the layout, he focused his attention on me.
And damn does he love attention. He follows me everywhere in the room, and when I sit down, he jumps up on my lap or the desk (which is cute now, but I've been gently discouraging it, since it'll be annoying when I'm on the computer. When he gets access to the rest of the house, I won't mind if he gets on the couch when I'm sitting there, as long as he's not scratching it up.) He came home at about noon, and is only now starting to calm down (not that he was hyper or anything, but right now he's lying down next to my chair).
No, I take that back, now he's climbing on my shoulders.
He's been eating well (the SPCA said he could stand to gain a few pounds), and has been using the litter box without any "accidents" beforehand (thank you lord!), and in general has been very affectionate.
And no, he's not evil. He just looks that way in photos.

Sometime on saturday, l33t passed away. I noticed saturday night when I went to go feed him. I immediate knew something was wrong when I saw the food dish I left friday still contained a peanut. (I don't know how you can really have a finicky rodent, but l33t would refuse to eat about half the ingredients in the mixed food I gave him. He was very careful to separate the "good" food from the "bad" food. However, peanuts and yogurt drops were always the first to get eaten.)
I don't know if this is considered morbid, but I'm already thinking about getting a cat. Every time I mentioned l33t to a cat person, they would always come back with "oh, you should get a cat, they're so lovable, etc, etc". Of course, having a hamster and a cat in the same house wasn't exactly an ideal situation, so I brushed it off.
I bought a book on cats (I had a couple cats through my childhood, but caring for a pet and being a kid around a pet are two different things), and will give it some thought, maybe visit the Nevada SPCA next week (this week will be way too busy for taking an afternoon off work). Look at the cute cats up for adoption...

Digging around some old files, I found this pic.

Study it carefully. This is the only time you'll ever see me in a tuxedo.

If you haven't heard it, it's used as the closing credits music in Terminator 3.
