(Doh. Looks like this became one LONG rant. So be sure to take a bathroom break before you begin reading.)

In the beginning, fo0bar had a Vic 20. And life was simple.

I love my Prius, but I hate its tires. They're expensive (relatively, $80 each), they're only made for the Prius so almost nobody carries them locally (thank you Big O!), only 2 types of tires are designed[0x01] to work with the Prius, and they go flat or pop if you look at them funny. I've had tires repaired about a half dozen times, I've had to replace 3, and I had to replace them all at 15,000 miles due to excessive wear (thankfully they were under warranty).

This evening I stopped at 7-Eleven to grab a soda, and when I walked out, I noticed the back left tire was flat. Thankfully I noticed it when I did, because it was just at the point where it was about to start damaging the rims if I drove on them. Luckily I had a safety cone in my trunk that I stole[0x02] from Nevada Bell[0x03], which I placed in the parking space next to the tire so I had some space to work. I took down the tire, put the spare on, and drove home. I'll go to Big O tomorrow morning after breakfast[0x04]. Grrrrr....

[0x01] The tires must be both Extended Load (XL) and Low Rolling Resistance (LRR), which narrows it down to the stock tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE92 XL), and tires made by a company in a country that probably doesn't exist anymore. There are reports of a couple other non-LRR tires working, but I don't want to risk it.
[0x02] Well, they abandoned it in Redundant's parking lot, and I considered it mine after a few days. Also, it makes up for the price we were paying for our OC3s :)
[0x03] Err, I mean SBC Nevada Bell. Err, I mean just SBC. All heil Ma Bell!
[0x04] Mmmmmmm, Pneumatic waffles...

I'm on vacation and sick. Hence, I seem to have a little too much time on my hands. Let me know if I missed your favorite distro.

  • @frankenspock More info about the Prius Bonneville test. Engine was "stock" mechanically, but yes, many more mods. http://ur1.ca/p9z0
  • @frankenspock Haha, yes. That car could totally beat even an out of control Prius.
  • @frankenspock Wait, that may have been Nissan. I think they were testing a Z when they said that.
  • @frankenspock Top Gear says Japanese Toyota performance cars' limiters disengage if they detect they're on a race track. Interesting if true
  • @frankenspock Of course I can't prove this, and the tires on 1st gen were S rated (112MPH), but my speedo said 119.
