So, I just tried to install Red Hat Linux 4.2 in a vmware VM on the laptop. Why? Because I'm both sadistic and bored. And considering RHL 4.2 was the first Red Hat distro I used (my first Linux distro was Slackware 3.something I think), I was curious as to how it looked compared to today.
I downloaded it from PlanetMirror, threw it on an NFS server (it appears ISO images for "old" RHL releases are no longer available), and proceeded to install. The text installer hasn't changed much in 8 years, except for being a little more crude, obviously. I went through all the pre-installation steps, then it tried to install RPMs.
And failed miserably. For each package, it threw out an error saying it was the wrong architecture. I switched to a separate virtual console and did a "uname -a", which reported the architecture as "i?86". Doh. Looks like kernel 2.0.30 doesn't understand what an i686 processor is. :)
Oh well.

Dear Humanity,
We're already 4 years into the current decade, and we still don't know what to name it. This is unacceptable. Please remedy this situation. I expect to see your report on my desk no later than 9AM tomorrow morning.

Don't worry, I'll add more...
I took my experiences from building a 1.2TB array and wrote a little article on how you too can build a terabyte storage server for less than the cost of a cheese pizza!
