Appearantly clicking "reload" occasionally on the fedex shipment status page does not make the truck drive any faster.

Coworker: What are you doing?
Me: I'm putting together a SQL schema for the power management system backend.
Coworker: I didn't know you knew SQL.
Me: Yeah, I've worked with MySQL, Postgres and Oracle.
Coworker: Wow. I guess you really are a jack of all trades.
Me: ... Master of none.
I just got hit with a $30 fine from Capital One for not paying my CC bill on time. That's the second time this year. I really need to keep better track of my finances.

This discussion about hard drive manufacturers using base 10 notation really annoys me. It comes up every once in awhile, I try to argue my case, but I eventually give up in frustration. It comes down to this:
How many meters are in a kilometer?
How many grams are in a kilogram?
How many bytes are in a kilobyte?
Does anybody else see a problem here? The prefixes kilo, mega, giga, etc have been around for a very long time, and have been a base 10 prefix. But computers came along and fucked that all up. Now a kilobyte is supposedly 1024 bytes, not 1000.
If it were just that, I wouldn't mind too much. The problem is since the beginning of magnetic storage time, 1 kilobyte has meant 1000 bytes, like it should. Therefore, an 80GB hard drive is 80,000,000,000 bytes. What people are saying is that hard drive manufacturers are trying to deceive consumers by representing 1 kilobyte as 1000 bytes instead of 1024.
Sorry folks, the hard drive manufacturers are right, and nearly everybody else is wrong. They should not have to modify their definition of a prefix (which, again, is the RIGHT definition) because the wrong definition has become standard practice.
Now, there is a standardized prefix for specifying base 2 annotation. Granted, it is relatively new (5 years), but it's logical because using base 2 logic on a base 10 prefix is wrong. And I would like nothing better than to use the correct prefixes where appropriate, but since nobody else has bothered using these prefixes, nobody would understand. ("I would like to add an 80 gigabyte hard drive and an extra 512 mebibytes of ram to my system." "Huh? mebibyte?") Until the day when base 2 prefixes are widely used, I'll continue to accept that people (myself included) use incorrect terms like "megabytes" to discuss base 2 systems. HOWEVER, I will not tollerate the idea that hard drive manufacturers should ditch the correct way of expressing things in favor of the wrong way, simply because the wrong way is more popular.

Why has Amazon been so slow/deceitful lately?
Order Placed: October 6, 2003
Shipping estimate: Oct 13, 2003
Delivery estimate: Oct 15, 2003 - Oct 16, 2003
For the one item I ordered:
Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours
This is not an isolated incident. Sorry to tell you this Amazon, but "within 24 hours" != "7 days later".

I was checking out the cisco software download page today, looking for anything new. Looks like 12.3 software is out for my 806. I'll probably upgrade, since, like, upgrades are cool and stuff.
What pisses me off is that IPv6 software is not available for ANY of the platforms I own or have at work. IPv6 is supposed to be the next generation bullshit, but it's never going to take off if support is never released for the routers. Therefore, I offer Cisco this demand:
Give me fucking IPv6 support for the following platforms:
* Cisco 7600
* Catalyst 6500 (Native IOS)
* Pix 535
* Catalyst 3550 (EMI)
* Cisco 806 (what's annoying is IPv6 support is available for the 802, 803, and 804, but not the 806)
You have 24 hours to comply before I start executing hostages.

I walked downstairs and flipped on the TV. There were saturday morning cartoons on. This one was some kids anime show, but what struck me as odd was the characters were summoning TRADING CARDS to fight evil or something.
Society is doomed.
