That's all right, everybody confuses Frank and Sam

  • Posted by Ryan Finnie on July 31, 2003, 3:56 pm

All of our customer- and internet-facing cisco equipment has been upgraded to fix the recent Cisco vulnerabilities, but we still have a few internal 2950s that are still running old code (sh ver says there were compiled April 2001). Rather than track down the proper people who have access to the support contract for these devices, I decided to play the "this is a security fix, gimme gimme gimme" card. So I called up TAC. Among other things:

"What is the device's serial number?"
"F as in Frank, 1, 2, 3, 4..."
"Okay, I've got S as in Sam, 1, 2..."
"No, that's F as in Frank."

and later:
"And your name?"
"Ryan Finnie, last name is F as in Frank, i, n..."

He didn't confirm spelling on my name, which I really didn't notice. Later, when I check my email, surprise surprise:

Subject: Cisco welcomes Ryan Sinnie to the Technical Assistance Center

Ugh...
